Vol. 46 – November 20, 2005
Ericksonian Hypnotic Language Patterns
Reverse Meta Model
In NLP the “meta model” is Bandler and Grinder’s name for the wellformedness conditions of the surface structure of the English language*. (*See their book “The Structure of Magic.”) In Hypnosis we sometimes chose to deliberately violate these wellformedness conditions (“reversing the meta model”) in order to be purposefully and artfully vague.
Volume 46. “Structure of Magic” Presuppositions 21 – 25.
Bandler and Grinder’s book, “The Structure of Magic” is a treasure trove of incredibly useful presuppositions. We are bringing them to you in summary.
21. Selection Restrictions
(restricts the groups you can select from)
If my professor gets pregnant, I’ll be disappointed. (ergo, the professor is female.)
22. Questions
(implies through the asking of a question)
Who learned the most?
23. Negative Questions
Aren’t you interested in taking your skills to the next level?
24. Rhetorical Questions
Who cares whether you run or not?
25. Spurious not
I wonder if you are not already far ahead of the curve?
I know you know having a functional facility with these patterns would be useful, to say the least. So I’m also sure you’ll want to take the time to practice these by writing them out and then actually using them with your fellow humans, now won’t you?
See you next week.
Have fun!
